Join the Exodus from Capitalism:
21st Century Maroons from Prison and Patriarchy
Saturday, September 21st, 7PM
Food for Thought Books, 106 North Pleasant Street, Amherst MA.
From the Kimbundu word kilombo, a quilombo is a mountain stronghold of maroons – people who escaped from slavery and the colonial plantation system, to build a new world in resistance and defiance to the dominant world order. Primarily built and organized by Africans, quilombos also included indigenous peoples, poor whites and others who didn’t want to eat or be a piece in the colonial capitalist pie. These rebel communities survived for centuries throughout the whole western hemisphere!
Here we resurrect the tradition of the quilombo with a celebration of 21st century maroons from prison and patriarchy! We invite you to join us in a soulful convergence of revolutionary politics, poetry and music, hosted by Ecosocialist Horizons, PM Press and the International Campaign to Free Russell Maroon Shoatz at Food for Thought Books in Amherst, MA.
Russell Maroon Shoatz is a former Black Panther and US political prisoner who has been incarcerated for almost 30 years in solitary confinement. His recent book Maroon the Implacable: The Collected Writings of Russell Maroon Shoatz, published by PM Press with Ecosocialist Horizons, explores the history of maroons, and develops a theory of revolution based on marooning, eco-feminism, and ecosocialism. The International Campaign to Free Russell Maroon Shoatz has been organizing around the country and around the world to bring justice to this 70 year old man who should be immediately released from solitary confinement. Join the campaign now!
Ecosocialist Horizons is an organization dedicated to facilitating the growth of the ecosocialist movement, through a multimedia website, a radio show, publications, and by organizing convergences to advance diverse struggles toward an ecosocialist horizon.
