A palenque is a maroon community — a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual society of resistance and celebration, which rejects enslavement and plantation agriculture, and which prefigures a new humanity in harmony with itself and with its environment. From the legendary Palmares of Brazil to the Great Dismal Swamp of the United States, palenques were home to African, indigenous and European peoples who sought refuge from capitalism and realization of the commons. On the sacred ground of Marble Hill, we will do our best to resurrect that spirit, bringing together diverse communities in love and struggle, to party like it’s a palenque!

Keynote speakers will include:
Colia Clark, veteran of the Civil Rights Movement, exponent of black liberation struggles and ecosocialism, from Harlem to Haiti and from Alabama to Algeria. Tune in here to see her keynote speech at the third ecosocialist convergence in Troy NY. And wait until you hear her sing!
Livio Rangel, visiting from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, lifelong organizer and educator in indigenous and campesino communities, and with ecosocialist movements from the Guardians of the Seeds in Monte Carmelo to the Congress of Biological Diversity. Also an expert in maracas and salsa!
Ben Cashdan, visiting from Azania (aka South Africa), a television producer and filmmaker, whose commitment to revolutionary politics in his work has resulted in censorship by the government and has earned him the friendship of social movement heroes like Harry Belafonte and Trevor Ngwane.
Estefanía Narváez, visiting from Ecuador via Boston, one of the lead organizers with the Real Food Challenge, whose passion and strategy for social and environmental justice connects student organizing in the USA around food systems to struggles in South America for defence of land and life, from resisting the Belo Monte dam in Brazil to upholding the Ecuadorean constitutional ban of GMOs in the country.
Alejandro Molina, visiting from Chicago, founder and leader of the National Boricua Human Rights Network, and a close friend and long-time colleague of political prisoner Oscar Lopez Rivera. Coordinator of the May 30 Coalition, he will mobilize us take action at the end of this month for the Nelson Mandela of Latin America!.
About the 52 Marble Hill Summer House Parties: In the summer of 2011, the Villalobos Brothers opened their backyard and started hosting an informal concert series. Little did they know that these small gatherings would soon become monster parties of mythical proportions! By the end of 2012 hundreds of guests would make the trip uptown, coming in from An Beal Bocht, Manhattan College, the Shul of New York, Columbia University, the Mariachi Academy and the United Nations. By the end of that summer the Marble Hill Parties had become a weekend destination… your most delicious urban escape, a legendary summer party with all the live music… and none of the drama. Great musicians have graced their stage: from the classical Indian trio Karavika, to the reggae band Rocky and the Pressers and from Bernardo Palombo to Mariachi Real de Mexico, Jarana Beat and Los Cojolites.
About Ecosocialist Horizons: Ecosocialism is a vision of a transformed society in harmony with nature, and the development of practices that can attain it. It is directed toward alternatives to all socially and ecologically destructive systems, such as patriarchy, racism, homophobia and the fossil-fuel based economy. It is based on a perspective that regards other species and natural ecosystems as valuable in themselves and as partners in a common destiny.
