Bhopali: The Disaster Is Here
November 2, 2013
Join us on Thursday November 21st for the New York City premiere of the internationally acclaimed film “Bhopali”.
The Bhopal gas disaster, which claimed the lives of over 30,000 innocent people in 1984, reconsidered in light of all the many chemical disasters impacting communities around the world, brings us to the front lines of the international struggle to challenge corporate power.
As the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal reminds us, the Bhopal disaster didn’t happen. It is still happening. And it is here. Perpetrated by Union Carbide (now Dow Chemical, traded on the New York Stock Exchange), the Bhopal disaster is a case of corporate crime and impunity which should drive all of us, at the intersections of social and environmental justice, to seek a revolutionary future.
This event, part of a national tour, will feature Bhopali survivor-activist, Sanjay Verma, who lost 7 members of his immediate family in the Bhopal gas disaster, and has become a key voice in this ongoing struggle for justice.
In addition to the the movie and the speaker, those who attend will be treated to the live original music of the Scientific Soul Band, featuring emcee and freedom singer Spiritchild, baritone saxophonist and composer Benjamin Barson, and more. The musical arm of an organization dedicated to celebrating the unity of arts and politics, the Scientific Soul Band combines the most advanced musics of oppressed peoples across the planet to build an ecosocialist and matriarchal movement for inter-communal liberation and self-determination.This event is also hosted by Ecosocialist Horizons, an organization dedicated promoting ecosocialism as a worldview and as a movement, and to building an international united front for social and environmental justice.
This tour of Bhopali is also brought to you by The International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal North America (ICJB-NA), with support from the Association for India’s Development (AID) and Amnesty International USA/Canada. It will take place from October – November 2013, and will travel across the United States and Canada.
